Diploma Frame & Tassel Box
I made this frame for a good friend of mine so she could hang her Picture, College Diploma, & Tassel from.
I deviated from the standard block picture frame because I wanted the frame to look like a book.
I figured the S curve would look like an open book & the numerous layers of wood that show & stretch with the carved cove, look just like pages.
I used Birdseye Maple for the face, Hard Maple for the body, Walnut for the trim & Purple Heart for the Inlay & the corner splines.
The dimensions are 24" Wx 16"H x 1.5" D
The box is 2"W x 11"H x .75" D
Here is wide angle of the frame & box together.
Here is a close-up of the purple heart splines, the Cove i cut on the table saw & the shaping with a card scraper.
Here is the closeup of the tassel box that will be mounted within the frame.
After laminating 4/4 Hard Maple to 4/4 Birdseye Maple, i took it to the jointer to flatten & square up.
After I squared it all up on the planer & tables saw, I cut a rabbet for purple heart inlays.
Here is the glue up of the walnut strips to the inside & outside cheeks to cover up the glue line seam between the two maple boards.
Here is the glue up of the purple heart inlays.
Here is the setup for cutting the coves. There is my test piece in the bottom left.
Here is the closeup of the ridges the tablesaw blade left behind.
Lots of scraping to get it smooth again.
Here is the glueup of the strips for the tassel box.
The tassel box frame will be joined with miters & the panel will be floating in a closed rabbet.
I did more carving with the table saw on the bottom edge to complete the "S" curve. A lot more scraping, sanding & shaping to do by hand.
After much hand shaping, Here's a shot after I cut the miters & the Rabbet on the inside cheek.
and a quick test fit.
...and more shaping by hand to get the miters co-planer at the joints.
After glue up, i cut the spline curfs with a jig i made.
And a glue up of the Purple Heart splines.
And then a final shaping & sanding by hand to 320 grit.
After being satisfied with the shaping, i took it to the paint booth. I sprayed many coats of Brushing Lacquer with an HVLP gun.
and a close up of that beautiful grain.
Here you can see how the layers of wood look like pages in an open book.
Love the wood combination. How did you get the form on the frame? Chamfer bit, or a combo of 2 router bits? Thanks for sharing
I carved the majority of it out with the table saw, the rest was shaped by hand. I revised the annotations, please have a look! =)
Just checked the rest of the pictures out! Thanks for adding them, it cleared up my question.
