Side Table With A Twist

author-gravatar KuffysWoodwork May 20, 2017

Hi guys, first post here so I'll see how it goes.I recently finished making this little side table for myself. It stands about 615mm high, made from Tassie Myrtle and Tassie Oak. I made it for my new ADSL2+ modem and home phone. It can also be used as a pretty decent drinks table, bottle of whiskey in the bottom, glasses in the middle, and the top for holding the glass full of whiskey. I would have mocked this up for a photo but I don’t have any whiskey or wine in the house...I know, I'm pretty boring :)

I also filmed the making of this table for my YouTube channel.

The parts for my table. 3 Myrtle legs, a board for the 3 circular shelves and a length of store bought dowels to connect the legs to the shelves. I made a MDF template to use to flush trim the curved Myrtle legs on my router table.

This is how I made the circular shelves. I could have used a router trammel, but I would then have to sand the edges somehow. All I have done here is brought my lathes tailstock up and applied pressure to the underside of the shelf pressing on to a 8" face plate using the face plate as a friction chuck Then I turned the edge to a true circle and sanded the edge beautifully, and most importantly EASILY :) I hate hand sanding, but I don't mind it so much when the lathe's motor is doing all the hard work.

Without having a horizontal borer in my shop, this is how I drilled the holes in the shelves. I just drilled a deadly accurate hole through a large piece of timber and lined up my marks on the shelf and drilled away.

Who needs clamps to apply pressure to the top while the glue sets up. A few Coolabah and Red Mallee burls and a bottle of titebond does nicely

The table in its final resting place doing a great job of keeping my phone and modem off the floor. The wires look pretty messy, but really that position in the house is upstairs in the rumpus room where I would keep a TV for the kids...if I had any little devils.
