Laying out and Cutting the Dovetails

To begin I use two sets of dividers to layout the dovetails. I set the first set of dividers to 3/4" for the half pins. Since this is a large case, I want the half pins to be larger to make sure that when I glue this chest together they wont break. The second set of dividers is used to mark the distance of one full tail and one full pin. I felt like 1 11/16" gave me the right number of tails and they were a good size.

Next up I use my dovetail marker to mark the tails and begin cutting them with my pull saw. After all of the tails were cut, I used my bow saw to remove the pin waste, leaving about 1/8" of waste above my scribe line.

Using a chisel I slowly chop away the waste until I have about 1/16" of waste in front of my scribe line. I place the chisel in the scribe line and tilt it just slightly off of 90 degrees and chisel away the waste. I only go down about half way, flip the board over and then remove the rest of the waste.

I repeat these same steps for the pin boards.
