Hand Tool Workbench

author-gravatar Kalzenith Mar 09, 2019

This will be my second hand tool workbench. The first one lasted about a year before I decided I need to upgrade. It was far too small, and it was mounted onto a wall. So it's time to make something a bit more functional

Here's a mock up of the bench. It's made from coffee stir sticks, wooden skewers, and some finishing nails

I plan to make a twin screw end vise as well as a twin screw leg vise. The lower screw might be inconvenient to operate, but I think it will be worth it for the amount of control it offers.

It's time! Picking up some hemlock fence posts.

Made all the cuts I need in one go.

Apparently my 2' clamps are too short to clamp my 24" bench.. Time to buy more clamps.

Gluing up the bench top. I didn't get enough long clamps so I ganged up some shorter ones to help.

When clamping the leg, I didn't notice that one of the pieces was wider than the others, so it ended up prying the bench top apart... I'll just fill it with epoxy later..

Both legs done! Nearly killed myself lowering it onto the ground and flipping it right side up.

After the bench top split, I decided I need to reinforce it across the grain. So I bored 12" deep 1.125" diameter holes to drive dowels into.

And then I decided to reinforce the corners the same way.

Several hours of sanding later and it's starting to look like a bench.

Here I'm filling the many gaps with epoxy. I used nearly a liter

Installed the leg vise's back jaw, and started the final smoothing/epoxy removal. I think I can skip arm day this week.

Took almost a liter of Tung oil but the first coat is down
