The Neapolitan Desk
We were in need of a desk and couldn't find anything reasonably priced of good quality. Naturally, i said I could make something. She said she wanted something mid century modern to match the rest of the house. I had no idea what that meant but remembered seeing a picture of something she might like. I went to Google SketchUp and this is the final product. The base is plywood , the face frame is poplar (because it paints so nice). Would you look at that ash, on top and how the grain pops. The drawers are maple, cherry and black walnut. The contrast flows so nicely from top to bottom.
Finished desk in a different light
Finished desk in it's new home
Set of drawers maple., Cherry and black walnut
Ash top with a maple stain
Drawer faces, all planed and ready for oiling
I cant imagine this ash staining any nicer than it did. It took the stain so evenly .
Pre finished ash top
The glue up. The angle iron and clamps on the ends help keep the boards aligned nice and straight. Thank you Instagram.
Gluing the legs on was quite process especially when I almost dropped one of the pipe clamps on the top. I ended up adding some L brackets on the backs for stability
Nice little touch of detail on the top
The drawers fitting nice and snug thanks to the kreg drawer slide jig
All 6 drawers
The desk frame prior to paint
All the plywood neccassary for the base.
