Walnut and cherry storage bed

author-gravatar rrich1 Jan 03, 2020

This is a storage bed I made to match the modern chest of drawers and nightstand I previously built for my oldest son.

The headboard and footboard is made from cherry and the center is air dried walnut. The construction is frame and panel. The legs are glued up 8/4 material to give me the thickness for the legs.

The storage area is constructed from plywood and pocket screws. The cherry face frame is attached with pocket screw as well. The face frame is extended upward to hold the mattress into place.

The drawers are constructed of the same air dried cherry and air dried walnut. Both sides of the bed have a continuous walnut grain pattern to them. The construction of the drawers is box joints made on the band saw. I routed out spaces on the drawer fronts to put your hand in and pull the drawer open. Reasoning for this is 1. I didn't want outside drawer handles used as steps and 2. I didn't want legs dinged or scraped on them.

Ken, thanks! As for how I attached it I used threaded inserts. To help with the weight of everything I made the entire middle section sit on the floor. Meaning I set the two middle pieces on end and attached the toe kick base with pocket screws to them making it one piece. Next I layed the whole thing onto the base and then I drilled two holes through the ends into each leg. I then used threaded inserts into the legs and attached it with bolts and washers. Since nothing is really weight bearing it is a really strong joint. We move it in and out to reach the back drawers to change out clothing or other long term storage.

In the pic of just the head board you can see the four threaded inserts near the bottom of the leg.
