I made this with solid white oak for the top and the lower shelf slats, and because I knew I was going to make the frame black and because of some limits I had with shop tools I chose some 2x2 pine.  It worked out but in the future I would do this oak for the frame to keep the grain texture consistent.  I used Dominos for the joinery and some figure eight fasteners for the top.  I used the White Rubio Monocoat for white oak parts and the frame I used black Rubio with first using their black precolor easy stain.  I also drilled out the legs to hide an adjustable felt furniture pad so it can't be seen but still provides protection.
