Conductor's Batons

I made two batons for my band directors that I've had for three years as a parting gift. Thought it might be nifty to show others.  Materials: Rock maple, Mystery wood 1, Mystery wood 2 Finish: Musical Instrument Lacquer Tools: Kanna, 220mm Ryoba, dozuki

The first baton for my tuba/trumpet instructor

Anyone know what this wood is? Or the lighter wood? They were both in a scrap cart. Beautiful but I fear they are exotic. I love the rays on this side, but the face grain is pretty nice too!

And this one for my band director. Nice guys, they've put up with me for three years but senior year I'm out- my friends are no longer in that band and I find my lack of passion for classical music to be disrespectful to those who do. plus I hate smartmusic

The band director later got my attention away from the end-of-the-year 'party' (cleaning instruments, push pops, and giggling in the lesson room with the DJ keyboard) to tell me that the baton was actually perfectly balanced, the handle was very comfortable, and it was the right length and weight.  I was very happy that I got it right without any idea how to!

Didn't get too many photos. Made these while dealing with end of the year homework, studying, SATs, Finals. So these photos were quick ones intended for the gram, hence the artsy-ness.

Handle stock and sawn wavey-wandy part stock. I should find the terms, I just know there's terms for these parts.

I need to get a finer grit waterstone, polish my kanna blades more. Should also get better at tuning the sole and using the kanna in general. Still not bad for a student's kanna, with the blades polished on a soft Arkansas.

I love shaping curves with hand planes. So many nice shaves!

Ended up sawing a slant on the side after determining this straight-barrel would be too boring.

Thanks for viewing! Hopefully the next project will have more pictures.
