Do you use tack cloths for removing dust while finishing?

I've used them since I started woodworking but recently started to notice that when I use them on places like legs or table tops where theres an edge, the finish doesn't seem to dry as fast as the rest of the surface. Think i'm using bad tack cloths? Which brand do you use?

  1. Sean,

I personally have never used tack cloths. I've heard some horror stories before with it interfering with finishing so I've always skipped out. I just blow off my piece to be finished and wipe it down with a paper towel until there's no longer sawdust being picked up.

    1. Do you use a shopvac with a brush attachment or just compressed air? I guess another option is a paper towel with a light amount of mineral spirits if i'm using an oil based finish. If water based, I can use a paper towel with a little water on it.

      Thanks for the comment

  2. I mainly just blow the item off with compressed air. I've also heard of people having issues with tack rags leaving a coating.

    1. Yeah I’m starting to think I’m going to switch my game up and use a vacuum or compressor.
