Hybrid Roubo/Nicholson Bench

author-gravatar Wipiid Sep 04, 2015

Hybrid bench built using standard 2x lumber from the home depot.  heavy duty based on the paul sellers design, but unique for me and my needs/style.

Dry fit

Glue up of the front and back bench tops. Used a great tip, spread the glue with a 3" roller.  It spread fast and easy and very even coat.

Clamp up of the tops.  Once this was dry, i ran it through the planer to flatten and smooth the faces.

2x8 legs ripped to 5 1/8"band ran through the planner.

I then cut the shoulders of the 2 mortise on the table saw.  Then used the bandsaw to cut the waste out.

Not seen here is the 3rd mortise which will support the face apron.  11" wide.  Will be backed with another cut of 2x12.

Planing of the front and back apron.

More apron planing.  These were planed to the same thickness as the leg components.

more 2x12 through the planer

here i am dry fitting the apron to the leg assemblies

On this picture you can see the 3rd mortise i cut to support the apron. this brings the leg and apron into the same plane as well.

Attaching the first apron.  you can see the 3rd mortise better here.

i glued the apron to the leg, but also drove screws.

The aprons are attached with screws, but still went with the wedge to lock it in tight.

the large support piece you see on the right runs the full length of the apron between the legs.  these are there to double up the thickness, this is for holdfast holes and majorly to prevent racking.

another pic of the wedge.

in Paul Sellers design the large laminated tops were mortised to fit over the leg assembly, however i did no do this.  I drove a few screws from the legs into the top underneath.

i used the 4 1/2 smoother!!!!  and the bench didn't slide!!!!

Re sawing a 2x12 that ripped to aprox 8 3/8" for the trough board.  Didn't want to wast all that nice SYP construction lumber.

Photo of Hybrid Roubo/Nicholson Bench

All resawed. Ran through planer and took off about 1/8" off each side.

Photo of Hybrid Roubo/Nicholson Bench

Here is the finished 2x hybrid work bench. The trough is a bit wader than expected but works out well.

Overall 35" tall 24" deep and 75" long.

The trough board is about 7/8" thick and is pressure fit.  I had to drive it home with my mallet.  this will allow me to replace it if i need to.

Cant wait to do the dog pattern and build my pipeclamp moxon vise.

That workbench sure can hide in tiny cracks! All I see is lumber. :-p

HAHA, i know right!

tomorrow I joint the 2x4 and laminate two 5 piece sections, and while they dry, i rip the 2x8 down to ~5-6" wide and start making the legs as well.
