Low Workbench

I've seen several low profile workbench build videos and it took me a while to get the confidence to tackle one. I originally convinced myself I needed one to relieve the back pain from spending too much time hunched over my regular workbench. The truth was it was just a cool looking project. My local Woodcraft sells Jarrah cut-offs by the pound and I've used it for lots of small projects.

I went with a design inspired by Adrian Preda, but I don't have his hand tool skill. The hard part for me was fitting the vice because I wanted it to be square and flush. That meant routing out space for the vice half that attaches to the table. I knew from others that the Irwin vice was typically not square when mounted so I had a difficult time with squaring it up with shims.

The sliding dovetail ends are hard maple and a nice contrast to the jarrah. I tried a couple of different leg styles and eventually opted for a simple beveled edge. I finished it with Watco Danish Oil and then beeswax. In retrospect I wish I had taken some build shots, but I kinda got caught up in the workflow and I wasn't sure it was going to turn out this well. I plan on adding a small drawer in front, but not in a hurry.

* (Edit)  I added the drawer. Love it.
