There are some projects that really showcase what you are capable of and more importantly, provide you an avenue to fully push your existing limits.  That is what this project was for me as it was an opportunity to design, build and showcase a 100% custom piece.

The Mid Century Modern Bar Cart was built for the 2019 IG Builders Challenge.  

Build Details:

The entire piece is made of Walnut with Buckeye accents. The joinery of the legs are Dominoes & Titebond Dark Glue. The trays are joined by a hand cut inlaid dovetail, featuring large Buckeye pins that bookend a 1/8th Buckeye pin. The tray bottoms are joined to its frame by a rabbit and Walnut Dowels with Titebond Dark glue. The Buckeye inlay on the top tray is a 1/4 inch dado and finished with a 1/8th walnut dowel through the half lap. All of these joints are glued with Titebond Dark glue. The legs are joined to the trays by Dominoes and Titebond Dark glue.  Each tray has a small champher on the bottom to soften it touch. The cart is finished with Walrus Oil Furniture Finish and then finish polished with Walrus Oil Furniture Wax.

Design Details:

Having never built an MCM piece before, the design process started with a good old fashioned education. I purchased 3 books, including the iconic "Mid Century Modern" by Cara Greenberg. The other books, which are outstanding in their own right, are: Mid Century Modern by Bradley Quinn and Mid Century Modern Furniture by Michael Crow. My goal was to take what I learned and produce a piece that paid homage to the designs and designers who influenced the MCM furniture we know today. After a week of rough draft drawings, the final piece was drawn while in Starbucks enjoying a hot chocolate.
