Modern Box
A few years ago my dad gave me a red oak board he had left over from a chest he’d built for my sister. This Father’s Day I decided to make something with it and gift it back to him.
This box is heavily inspired by box 4 from Matt Kenney’s (@mekwoodworks) book “52 Boxes in 52 Weeks”.
The original board was flat sawn so I ripped and flipped it to get a more rift/quarter sawn look. The drawer fronts and base were ebonized using a white vinegar/steel wool mixture and bark tea to help raise the tannins in the oak and get a deeper black. The finish is a raw linseed oil & natural resins mix. Drawer pulls are split key rings wrapped in waxed twine.

Continuous grain quarter sawn, curly hard maple drawer bottoms
Grain wrapped all four edges
Hand for size 😋. 12” x 6” x 2.5” (roughly)
I made two so we could both have one.
