2x R/Woodworking Challenge
For the 2x challenge, I decided to include my other hobby, firearms. I made a set of grips, a case and a cleaning/display stand for my RIA 1911. Enjoy!

Had some 2x4 cutoffs lying around. Dry as a bone!

Dimensioned it down. Had to use my new bandsaw.

Not bad grain all things considered.

Cut off a 5" long piece for making the grips.

Book matched. The R is for right grip, but it's cut from the left side book match. Bizarre, I know, but I've never goofed up after a hundred or so grips.

This piece will be the base for the cleaning/display.

All cut to 1/4" for making the case.

Cutting the stand magazine.

Oops! Forgot about the magazine release. I'll have to chop a little off.

Done!

Sanded down to 220. Not bad looking!

Cutting the dowel holes for the stand magazine.

Didn't take a photo, but I used dowel guides to line it up correctly.

All glued and I forgot to chamfer it! So I just eye balled it on the belt sander.

Grip time! First hole being cut with a steel fixture I bought off a grip maker online.

Brass peg in the first hole and cutting the second. This part is absolutely crucial. Even if you're off by 1/32", it won't fit.

Tracing the right side grip. I use the brass peg and bit to hold it correctly.

All traced and ready to cut the main spring housing pin and magazine reliefs.

The bottom holes are 5/8" and the top one on the left is 3/8". Makes it so much easier to do it this step.

Quick trip to the bandsaw and rough cut it down.

Sanded on all sides just up to the trace lines.

I use a special stepped bit to cut the bottom counter bores for the bushings.

It auto centers and cuts the perfect counterbore.

Filing the relief for the plunger guard.

Needs to be just a little bit above the plunger guard.

I made this fixture to make grips. Indispensable.

All sanded down and beveled on the bottom. The grips should be around 1/4" thick.

Same stepped bit for the top so the screws don't protrude.

Done! Now for the case!

Glued two sets of the 1/4" boards together for the case.

Right side will be the top and the left will be the right and left sides.

Traced the 1911 for the interior of the case

Router table time to cut the rabbet joints.

You get a rabbet joint! And you get a rabbet joint!

It actually fits! Phew...

All glued up and sealed.

Cut on the bandsaw about 1 3/4" from the top.

Didn't want to take the 1/2" blade off the bandsaw so I did the inside cutout on my scroll saw.

All cut up and glued in. The surroundings are on small scrap pieces of whatever was left over.

Sanded to 220 and ready for a finish.

Couple coats of satin lacquer.

Really happy with the results. The only thing I'll probably actually use is the stand. The grips are WAY to soft and I already have a case for this 1911. Thanks for following my 2x challenge!
