Iphone Passive Speaker From Scrap Wood
I've been thinking about making a passive speaker for my phone and the /r/woodworking scrap wood challenge was just the excuse I needed. I was rummaging and found this big knot in a piece of cherry and was struck with an idea- use the knot as the hole.
Began with a couple pieces of scrap cherry. This is what's left over when you buy "character" wood because it's cheaper.
I traced my phone on the back of one side, and you can see the downward lines that line up with the speaker on my phone. I wanted the sound to bounce around, which is why I put it on one edge.
Set up the router to the depth of my phone and free handed it.
Sand down the inside of the phone hole.
I decided to go ahead and hit the inside of the hole with tung oil before gluing it together. I'm very happy I did this.
Glue it up.
Once it dried, I ran it through the table saw to square it up and knock off the rough edges.
Decided to bevel the edges on my router table.
Now it's time to sand. I did it all by hand. Started with 120, switched to 220, and finished with a quick run of 600 so I could get a glass smooth finish.
Pics don't do it justice, 3coats of tung oil and some paste wax gave it an amazing finish.
