/R/Woodworking Contest Entry: Music Stand For The Wife
My wife saw this design online, but the build quality and price did not seem too attractive. So I decided to build one myself. (And a standing lamp with similar design first, to try out the concept.)
I choose (european) beech for the wood, OSMO hardwax oil and brass screws.
- Feet are 30x50x550mm
- Stem is 40x45x1500mm
- Tray is 5x40x400mm thin stripes, and some scrap for the back. (I think it is lighter colored beech...)
After cutting everything to size, I cut finger grooves into the end of the pieces for the movable links with a router. From both sides and very, very carefully with lots of measuring and testing. If I would have had a table saw, I would have used that.
The fasteners for the joints are standard M8 INOX carriage bolts epoxied into a square piece of wood with a little square cut out for the square part of the carriage bolts head.
I also polished the bolts heads by mounting them in the drill stand and touching up with wet sandpaper. That gave them a satin finish and look so much better.

The counterpart on the other side of the joint was a M8 square nut, epoxied into a square hole chiseled into the wood.
The Feet are two pieces with a 90deg lap joint. Then I cut mortises into the inner side of the legs thighs and the stem, and drilled a hole through to fix it with a M8 bolt.
Lots of sanding, and a liter of oil later - done!
Special thanks to Roy from /r/woodworking!
