220 Gallon Aquarium Base

author-gravatar Graeme Dec 09, 2017

I was ask to build a base for a 220 gallon aquarium, which is not an easy thing to build. I needed to make sure that it sits flat on the floor an the aquarium tank sits flat on the base. This is what I came up with.

It is all from 2x6 milled flat and straight, In the first couple of pictures you will see the aquarium in the background that will go on to the new base. I glue up some post and turn them on the lath  and after milling the 2x6 I let them sit for a week to make sure that the moisture evens out.

(You will see in some of the pictures that things are not line up and that is because it was just a dry fit.)

I knew that I needed to ensure that the tank sits flat on the base so I came up with a floating top on all four sides. this way it can be shimmed to the base of the aquarium and no one will see any gaps. Pls note that the four floating top sections are held in place by dowel pins

My first plans was to only have one door in the middle and have the two ends open, but then I found out that there was 2 filters so I needed to change the plan.

To all the wood workers out there that build aquarium base please let me know where I could have done better as I have only built a base for a 100 gallon aquarium for the same customer 6 months ago and she ask me to do one for her 220 gallon. So this is such a learning experience for me.
