Just Another Box.
My sister was getting married and I was planning on making something for her, so I decided to make her a box. I figured it would be nice to try something new so I did it with mitered corners and splines.
Going to my local wood place, I found some really interesting Monterey Cypress with an intrinsic grain pattern, so I picked it up along with a piece of walnut. It was my first time working with bot of these woods.
I resawed the monterey cypress and cut it so there would be continuous grain all along the box. Moving to the table saw, I mitered all of the corners to the best 45 degrees I could manage. I really need to figure out a more accurate way to do this. Then proceeded to put in some thin dados to receive the walnut top and bottom.
Resawed a piece of walnut on the bandsaw, and planed it to as thin as I dared. Then set up a bit of a jog so I could plane bevels on the edges of the top and bottom so it would fit into the dados. Dry fit was a success, and the glue up and clamping was challenging with the miters.
And then my sister decided to move her wedding date up. I had less than 24 hours to finish and overnight it arrive in time for the wedding. I hate rushing projects.
After separating the lid, I added some walnut posts in the interior corners of the box to guide the lid to its correct location, this took a bit of finagling to fit perfectly. A couple of coats of shellac yielded not my happiest creating. Learned alot, and will hopefully not be as rushed next time.
I know there arent any direct photos of measurements, but I think its pretty clear to judge the size of this puppy.
