Two Drawer Bubinga And Cherry Chest

author-gravatar LACraft Dec 06, 2018

This is a chest that I made in 2018 as a wedding present. I carved out then grain lines on the Cherry top using gouges and custom scrapers to create a natural flowing texture. The bubinga case features hand cut joinery with mitered shoulders. The mitered shoulders allowed me also miter the applied drawer fronts for a continuous grain match on all four corners. Doing this also allowed me to easily cut dados that matched the width of the drawer sides directly into the sides of the case. This worked out well to provide support for the opened drawers.

The interior is lined with pig suede and a bit of spalted curly maple.

For the finish I chose Waterlox. I applied 6 coats and rubbed out the last three to 2000g using mineral oil as a lubricant.
