Retro Modern Bed Frame

I started this design over a year ago. I would work on it in spurts and update the design with small twists and tweaks.

It didn't start out looking anything like this, but my wife and I are totally thrilled with how it came together.

We both tend to gravitate towards mid century inspired furniture, but love to add a updated modern twist.

We also aren't afraid to add a pop color from time to time, but that was really tested when my wife asked if I would consider painting it pink!

I actually love the look and couldn't be happier with the project as a whole.

The bed is made completely from soft maple. I designed the bed to be easily assembled and disassembled, mostly due to its size.

I used cross dowel joinery for the frame rails, using the Woodpeckers Deluxe Cross Dowel Jig.

The headboard is attached to supports with 1/4"-20 bolts and threaded inserts.

The supports are attached to the bed with 3/8"-16 bolts and nuts.

I went with a graphic twist for the headboard by routing shallow triangular patterns. This added a really nice effect.

The legs are 1/2" three rod by 8" hairpin legs, and I think they really complement the retro vibe of the design.

I went with a slat base from Ikea because I thought it would add additional support over plain flat slats.

I also picked up adjustable center supports from Ikea as well.

The finish for the bed is Kem Aqua Plus pigmented water based lacquer by Sherwin Williams. This is definitely my new favorite pigmented finish!

I made a build video for my YouTube channel that I think turned out great as well.

I'd love to know what you all think!
