Catchall Dish v2

author-gravatar ewharvey Feb 14, 2021

The second of catchall dishes I made, this time for myself, still using the design inspired by the Drunken Cutting Board done by Peter Brown in this video. This time I had a bandsaw, so I didn't need to fill the kerfs with epoxy like I did on the first version. I also tried to incorporate a gradient pattern like you see in some cutting board designs

Walnut and cherry stuck together with double sided tape, with guidelines drawn in to help me keep the gradient while cutting the curves on the bandsaw

I alternated walnut and cherry pieces to begin the checkerboard pattern, then glued them together

I repeated the process, but perpendicular to the first cuts to finished the drunken checkerboard pattern. The goal was to have the squares start big, and get smaller as they approached the other corner

Glueing the two boards together resulted in the prettiest clamp up I've ever done

... so I needed to show it twice

Began to turn it. Still can't fully envision how the triangle was possible, but I love it

Got lucky with the wood delineation right on the transition. Was satisfying to see

Go for wavy squares, end up with three triangles. Wasn't intentional, but ended up being my favorite part of the project

Finished with boiled linseed oil, spray-on shellac, and paste wax

I really like this one. Honestly not so much your other one but this one is really good looking. I also like the technique you used to cut everything out.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm really happy with this one, too. I have a soft spot for the other one since it was such a good learning experience, and really helped prepare me for this one, but they're definitely two different types despite the similar style. Thanks for the feedback!
