Ash Dresser

author-gravatar nomolosca May 22, 2020

My wife wanted a large dresser, so I embarked on my most ambitious project yet. I made it from ash as my wife wanted a light color and ash is inexpensive.

The project is mostly just dovetailed boxes inside of a larger dovetailed box. The dovetails are all hand-cut. The web frames that form the drawer pockets are done with dadoes and sliding dovetails.

I took influence from Nakashima for the base, keeping it pretty simple.

I did through dovetails on the top and half-blind dovetails on the bottom.

This was my first time using butterfly/dovetail inlays. The board that I chose for the middle row of drawers had some checking, but I loved the grain. I thought that cherry inlays would compliment the ash nicely.

Per request, here's a photo of the base. This was a dry fit.

This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing. Do you have any plans you could share, especially tips or more pictures of the base? I love what you did. Thanks.

Thanks! I don't have any plans, I just designed around what my wife generally wanted. It's about 60" long, just shy of 19" deep, and about 33" tall. The case itself is about 27" tall, and the base lifts it 5" or 6" off the floor. The drawers are all about 8" tall. The vertical divider down the middle is a solid panel that goes the full depth of the case, and sits in a dado.

I'll add a photo of the dry fit fo the base.

Thank you! This is extremely helpful. In this scenario, I’m the wife asking my husband for something like this, so any help is appreciated. Thanks again for adding the pics/information

Very nice! This is on my "honey do" list as well and I might lift some design details from yours.
