Monday Woodworking 101 - Stock Prep (short pieces) with Hand Tools (mostly)

Shop made winding sticks from scrap, they just need to be straight and parallel. A good plane can fix them if they're not in short order... I forgot to take pictures of the stock prep up to this point and the cross cuts, but believe me - you didn't miss much.

Why do they always have to twist and/or cup. This board was both, although I forgot to take pictures of the cup. Put the plane on it's edge and tilt it a little or use a straight edge to see if there's a cup, and mark the high spots. Plane those away.

Mark the high spots with chalk/marker/pencil and knock them down

Take passes diagonally from left to right, then right to left to help flatten the board.

Take passes diagonally from left to right, then right to left to help flatten the board. Making passes diagonally makes sure you don't accidentally add a twist in the board.

Almost there. Don't go overboard and start taking huge swathes with a scrub plane unless the board was REALLY bad. Keep checking as you go and make small adjustments as needed.

Left Diagonal passes again. There was also a right diagonal picture, but imgur ate it...

Still not 100% perfect, but good enough for me!

Knock it down to thickness using the new reference face you've been working so hard on at the bottom.

OK, the #7 was probably a little big for this, but it was already on the bench. That and for some reason I can square up the edge better than with the smaller planes.

Square.

Use your marking gauge or pencil and straight edge to score/mark a line. Cut to very close to proper width using a rip saw.

Using a marking gauge or pencil, mark the width on the side and start cleaning up the edge you just cut with the saw. Check for square as you go.

Couple passes left and it'll be the correct width!

Check often along the length of the board and fix as needed.
