Cherry Spoon

author-gravatar harrison17 Dec 11, 2018

This spoon was uncharted territory for me.  My mom told me how much she loves Welsh Love Spoons so for Christmas I decided to make her one.   Nowhere near as elaborate as the ones I used for inspiration, I'm happy with the results.  It's made from cherry and I finished it with Danish oil.

I made a few small sketches to get a basic idea of what I wanted and then made a full size template.  I cut this out and traced it onto my piece.

I drilled out the waste with forstner bits, used a scroll saw to cut to my line, and then an oscillating spindle sander where it would fit for the inside sections.

Using a Hirsch #7 35mm straight gouge to make the spoon part

Smoothing it out with a card scraper and sandpaper

Lots and lots of shaping.  Rasps, files, flat and round bottom spokeshaves, chisels, sandpaper, and most importantly, my card scrapers.

Finished with a few coats of Danish oil.

My wife likes to carve spoons while I'm puttering around the wood shop.  She will love this!  As do I!

Thanks!
