Mission Bookcase In Cherry

author-gravatar kfronczak Jun 10, 2019

I really appreciate Arts & Crafts era furniture, so I designed this piece to try and emulate design elements I liked. I opted for more of a mission-style which I thought would look really good with the Cherry I planned to build this from. I used a mix of power tools and hand tools here. Each arch and all the legs were hand-carved (saw, chisel, spokeshave) and the sehlves and top were flattened with hand planes. All of that was out of necessity, rather than desire, due to limited tool selection in my personal shop.

Wow, that's stunning! I love the design and the cherry looks awesome. What did you use for the finish?

Thanks! I put on a layer of BLO and followed that with a 2lb cut of Garnet shellac (around 6 coats). The BLO really helped make the curls pop and the Garnet shellac gave me the instant satisfaction of an aged cherry look, without having to wait a few years, haha

Thanks for letting me know! I love that finish recipe. I've used it a few times on cherry.
