Blanket Chest in quarter sawn Cherry

author-gravatar jalpino Mar 21, 2020

This is my take on a simple, Shaker style blanket chest. I used quarter sawn Black Cherry for the build.

Like most of my projects, I tried to stretch my skills a bit and in doing so, learned some good lessons along the way.

Here are some details about the build:
Dimensions: 34" L x 18" W x 20" H
Base Coat: 1# cut of dewaxed shellac)
Top Coat: Arm-r-seal ( 3 coats of semi-gloss, 1 coat of satin)
Hardware: Brusso hinges (CB-407)

Very nice the only thing I would STRONGLY advise is to put a couple of soft-close safety lid supports. In addition, I just don't think those hinges are designed for this type of use. They are more small box use. I do love Brusso hardware! I think if you add the soft-close hinge supports you could leave the Brusso hinges and get the best of both worlds.

Beautiful blanket chest! Thank you for sharing here on SimpleCove, I can't wait to see more of your work.

@WoodGate  Thanks for your comment. I actually have two soft close hinges that I did not install before taking pictures. This piece is going to my niece, I want to make sure those little fingers stay safe.

As for the Brusso hinges, I struggled to find high quality hinges that would work best with such a large piece. Any suggestions for future builds?

Thanks @Sean !

@jalpino That is a good question typically I only make small boxes. However, I do have a chest similar to yours on the list. Probably I would just do the safety hinges and not put any other hinge on the box. I will probably start on the chest in the beginning of summer. I plan on a fairly intricate interior with hidden compartments and lots of sliding trays and lift out parts.

@jalpino I used Horton Brasses PB-409 for my blanket chest. If you want to see that build it's over in the Guild: https://www.simplecove.com/guild/dovetailed-blanket-chest/

@Sean Thanks for the info. I can't believe that I didn't know about your build series before jumping into this project. Your blanket chest is beautiful!
