There probably is a 'right' way to do this, but I don't know what it is. The heatgun did work to get it nice and dark purple. However it was a bit putsy. I suppose I could have tossed the whole thing in the oven, but after a light sanding the color really evened out.
Waterlox high gloss finish. 3 coats, sanding with 800 between each.

After being in the sun, and then sanding again, I was right back where I started with the brown.
