Installing The Hinges And Lid Supports

In this video I begin by installing the Horton Brasses PB-409 hinges using a trim router. Since the router base is resting on the 7/8" thick walls of the blanket chest I first attach a sacrificial board to make that a safer process. Before routing the groove I set the height of the blade to the center of the barrel on the hinge and slowly route away the waste, leaving 1/8" of waste beyond the scribe line.
Next I installed the lid support hinges from Woodcraft. Pay close attention to the instructions when installing these as they need to be located in a certain position to ensure the lid will close all the way. To determine which support hinges to buy, you will need to figure out the inch pounds they will need to support. To figure that out, first take the width of the panel, divide that in half and then multiple that by the weight of the panel. My number came out to 110 inch pounds that the hinges will need to support.
Very nice! Those hinges look stout! I showed the blanket chest to my wife and see really likes it. I can't wait to build one.
That's awesome to hear, man! I can't wait to see it here on SimpleCove!
