Cutting the miters

Cutting The Parts Oversize
Even though the final length of the pieces are 6" and 10", I like to cut my pieces a little long and use a stop block for consistency. This makes sure that even if my piece isn't exactly 6 inches long, the second box side will be cut to the same exact length. I cut the 6" pieces to 6 1/4" and the 10 inch pieces to 10 1/4".
Mitering at the Table Saw
With the pieces cut long, I miter one end of the board and then mark out 6 inches on the other end. I then line up the 6" mark against my the kerf in my fence and setup a stop block. Once I cut this side to size, I line the second box side up against the stop block and take it down to size as well.

Some great tips Sean! Have you ever tried resawing the board and then using the two halves to get a complete wrap around for the grain pattern?
I have not. My bandsaw really needs tuning so I really can't resaw boards as accurately as I would like and I didn't have enough thickness on this board to try. I think a new bandsaw is in my future.
Speaking of bandsaws, I noticed your grizzly in the background. Which model do you have and how do you like it for tasks like resawing veneer?
The bandsaw is a 513XFB I think? It has the foot brake, but not the motor brake. I found a guy on CL that had a 3 HP motor for $50 and changed out the 2 HP motor it came with. It works extremely well on resawing, and can cut 1/32 veneer well with a sharp blade.
